Abstract

Background: This study examines the alarming suicide rates among youth in District Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, despite the region's high literacy rate and cultural richness. It highlights the necessity of a comprehensive sociological investigation to understand the root causes of youth suicide and to propose effective prevention strategies.

Method: The research employed a qualitative case study approach, utilizing in-depth semi-structured interviews with 20 participants, including suicide survivors and family members of victims. Purposive sampling was used to ensure the inclusion of respondents with direct experiences related to youth suicide in the region.

Results: The findings revealed a complex interplay of factors contributing to youth suicide, including:

  • Academic pressures
  • Family dynamics
  • Financial hardships
  • Mental health challenges
  • Societal expectations

Additionally, the study emphasized the profound psychological and social impacts on affected families and communities, as well as the inadequacies in the healthcare system's response to mental health issues.
